********************************************* * Razorback Radio News - Electronic Edition * * (c) February 1994 * ********************************************* Annual meeting - 1st Thursday of September Regular meetings - 1st Thursday of each month Informal Lunch meeting - every Thursday Operation SKYWARN - whenever necessary!! February Meeting ---------------- The February meeting was well attended. Bruce Vaughan gave an excellent presentation on "Trailing Edge Technology" that was enjoyed by all. Mr. Vaughan also brought with him an array of older radios for members to look at. Computers Donated ----------------- ARCUA was the recent recipient of 2.5 IBM PC Convertibles. These were donated to the club by the local IBM office through the efforts of John Carmack and Don/KB5WPM. John Carmack works at IBM and was able to rescue these portable PCs. Included are modules for serial communications and printing. This donation will allow W5YM to do several things, among them: Portable packet operations for emergencies; multiple uses at Field Day; Demonstrations; Emergency packet operations at W5YM when power is off. John, on behalf of ARCUA, Thank You! Antennas -------- The WARC beam is here! Now all that remains is it's installation and getting reimbursed by ASG. I wonder which will take longer? We also have the TH6DXX from W5XH to install on the main tower. Maintenance needs to be done as well. Watch for more than one work party in April. Code Net -------- The Morse code practice net continues every Thursday at 2100 local on the 146.7 repeater. We still need volunteers to run the net - please see N5UWY. Its easy to do and only requires about 45 minutes of your time. Exam News ---------- The Volunteer Exam session, previously tentatively scheduled for January 29, is still on hold. I have one firm volunteer examiner, our own Andy/AA5DL, and one other tentative from outside the club. Stay tuned for an announcement. Next Meeting ------------ Next meeting is March 3 at 7 pm in Bell 291. Special guest speaker will be Bruce Vaughan NR5Q. Bruce is well known in local ham circles and has had material published in QST. There will be refreshments. Remember I ---------- Remember to sign yourself in and out of the station. This gives us an idea of how much the station is used (and could be of use if the administration ever decides that it needs a new broom closet!). Remember II ----------- If you join the ARRL, make sure you do it through ARCUA. Why? Because the League lets us keep $5 from every new member that joins. We get $2 for every renewal, too. In addition to QST, ARRL membership gives you important benefits like inexpensive equipment insurance, a Field Organization helping hams in every state and a voice in amateur radio related affairs in Washington DC. 73 DE W5YM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Razorback Radio News is a Publication of the Amateur Radio Club of the University of Arkansas, Inc.
