********************************************* * Razorback Radio News - Electronic Edition * * (c) August 1994 * ********************************************* Annual meeting - 1st Thursday of September Regular meetings - 1st Thursday of each month Informal Lunch meeting - every Thursday Operation SKYWARN - whenever necessary!! Welcome Back!! -------------- Hard to believe, but the 1994-1995 school year is upon us! Many thing to do this year so let's get straight to the news . . . Congratulations --------------- ... to Walt N5YGR/AA who now holds an Advanced class license. Good Job, Co-Op-Boy! :-) Walt is "co-op"ing at Arkansas Nuclear One in Russellville this Summer-Fall, so he won't be around. His packet address is n5ygr@k5pxp.ar.usa.noam should you wish to write him. He also checks his wwc@engr account regularly. Annual Meeting -------------- The ARCUA Annual Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 1 at 7pm in room 291 of Bell Engineering. A summary of club activities over the Summer will be presented. Elections for all officer positions will be held. Be There . . . New Mailing List ---------------- Sharp-eyed readers of this 'zine may have noticed that for the first time it is being distributed (to most of you) via the W5YM-L mailing list! That's right, ARCUA members now have a new forum for discussing club- related activities. This list is intended to serve as a means of discussing ARCUA's activities as well as Amateur Radio in general. The list is not moderated. However, due to the fact that many people are being automatically subscribed to the list, I will request that you not use it for personal messages or "tests". Let's try to keep the "signal-to-noise ratio" high! For those not familiar with the concept of mailing lists (aka LISTSERVs), W5YM-L functions almost exactly like an FM repeater. Any mail that you wish to have distributed to the other subscribers is addressed to W5YM-L@UAFSYSB.UARK.EDU. The listserv software receives the message and redistributes it to all subscribers. All previous messages will be archived for future reference. There is also a file retrieval system included with the system that we may wish to make use of in the future. Should you wish to sign off from the list, send a mail message to LISTSERV@UAFSYSB.UARK.EDU with 'UNSUBSCRIBE W5YM-L' in the body (or simply contact me). There are many other functions associated with the LISTSERV software and I encourage you to retrieve the help file (send a message to LISTSERV with HELP in the body). PLEASE NOTE: any messages to W5YM-L are distributed to ALL subscribers, therefore make sure that COMMANDS are addressed to LISTSERV and *not* to W5YM-L!! :-) By default, all previous recipients of Razorback Radio News are subscribed to W5YM-L. IF YOU WISH TO RECEIVE *ONLY* THE RAZORBACK RADIO NEWS, PLEASE CONTACT ME AND I WILL UPDATE THE LIST ACCORDINGLY. B-Funds ------- Thanks to the efforts of Dan Puckett K5FXB, ASG Secretary Jason Gardner, and the Office of Dr. Lyle Gohn, Vice Chancellor-Student Services, ARCUA was able to secure our "B-Funds" allocation. This money has been used to upgrade our emergency power system at W5YM, purchase a WARC-band beam, and, most recently, purchase the long-awaited "Kansas City Tracker & Tuner". Activities ---------- The July issue of Razorback Radio News included a laundry list of maintenance and installation items that need to be done at W5YM. Most have yet to be completed. Not surprising, considering there were only 3 or 4 members around - and that includes Faculty Advisors! Needless to say, there is lot's of work to be done. Ideally, we will have the KCT&T installed by the first day of school. There is enough antenna work for at least two work sessions. September 3 is a good date for the first work party: It is a "home" football game (if you consider Little Rock "home"), it is not usually too hot, and it is soon enough in the semester that it shouldn't interfere with academic assignments. Zero-nine-hundred local time is a good time to start. Exam ---- As mentioned, ARCUA, in conjunction with the NWA Amateur Radio Club, will be hosting an Amateur Radio Exam on Saturday October 29 at 9am, in room 273 of Bell Engineering Center. Email me for details. Start studying *now* for that new license or upgrade! Challenge --------- As some of you know, the U of A has had the callsign W5YM for a very long time. How long? Well, the earliest proof we have found to date of our radio station's existence is a license for Special Land Station "5YM", dated June 4, 1920. That makes 1995 our 75th Anniversary!! This is an excellent opportunity for publicity. Only one snag remains: The book _Arkansas Airwaves_ by Ray Poindexter mentions a "Special Land Station" at the University as early as 1914!! That would work too, as 1994 would be our 80th Anniversary. Unfortunately, we have yet to discover anything to corroborate this evidence. Here's the challenge: Help ARCUA find evidence of the first "wireless" transmissions from the University of Arkansas. Members of Theta Tau may want to look at their archives to see what they can come up with. (The call number for _Arkansas Airwaves_ is PN1991.3.U6 P6 - it is an excellent history of early radio in the state.) 73 DE W5YM =========================================================================== Considering joining the ARRL? If you do, make sure you do it through ARCUA. Why? Because the League lets us keep $5 from every new member that joins. We get $2 for every renewal, too. In addition to QST, widely viewed as the best amateur radio journal on the market, ARRL membership gives you important benefits like inexpensive equipment insurance, a Field Organization helping hams in every state and a voice in amateur radio related affairs in Washington DC. Please contact the treasurer 3 months in advance of your renewal date. =========================================================================== Razorback Radio News is a publication of the Amateur Radio Club of the University of Arkansas, Inc.
