Last semester proved to be a very prosperous time for ARCUA and I'm sure this semester will build on that. We've got a full agenda for the Spring, and we need to get started, full steam ahead! Some of our larger projects include our upcoming part in the SAREX project and as the weather becomes nicer, our upgrade of the tower. Some additional projects I have in mind are cleaning out, doing an inventory, and repairing/selling some of our equipment that is taking up space. We also might try to sponsor a foxhunt or two if we can drum up enough interest. And since Spring is our typical season of nasty weather, perhaps a guest speaker or refresher course on the weather net and storm spotting would be in order. Most importantly, we need to get EVERYONE involved. There's plenty to be done, and as any club officer will tell you, I'm not the slightest bit hesitant to delegate authority! If you have any ideas you'd like us to try out or if you want to know how you could be more involved, LET ME KNOW! My email is jjm2@engr.engr.uark.edu, or I can be reached in care of this newsletter or the Department of Electrical Engineering. Jeff SAREX Update ------------ SAREX is the Shuttle Amateur Radio EXperiment. It is a joint project of the ARRL, AMSAT (the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) and NASA. The project's goal is to link astronauts in orbit with school kids on the ground via amateur radio. In April of 1992, W5YM had success contacting the shuttle on several occasions. Building on that, the club considered applying to the ARRL to become an official school contact. This publication's editor (Peter N5UWY) contacted Karla Van Brundt and Carole Peirce of Watson Elementary School in Huntsville who had both been working to create a "Space Camp" in that school. They thought it was a great idea and the application was sent. It took over two years, but Watson Elementary was finally chosen! The executive (and this newsletter's editor) have been working out the details since December. All is going well so far. Liftoff is *scheduled* for 2 March 1995 at 0637 UTC. The school's opportunity is not yet scheduled, but will be within 14 days or so of that time. This is a rather large window, but ARCUA has been promised 24 hours notice (!). More details will be discussed at the meeting. SKYWARN ------- Steve Piltz KA9MLL, a meteorologist from the NWS office in Tulsa, will be presenting a weather spotter's course on 3 February 1995 in Siloam Springs. 73 DE W5YM =========================================================================== Considering joining the ARRL? If you do, make sure you do it through ARCUA. Why? Because the League lets us keep $5 from every new member that joins. We get $2 for every renewal, too. In addition to QST, widely viewed as the best amateur radio journal on the market, ARRL membership gives you important benefits like inexpensive equipment insurance, a Field Organization helping hams in every state and a voice in amateur radio related affairs in Washington DC. Please contact the treasurer 3 months in advance of your renewal date. =========================================================================== Razorback Radio News is a publication of the Amateur Radio Club of the University of Arkansas, Inc.
