YA-Hooo!! Razorback-to-back??? Oh, sorry ... back to the newsletter ... Next Meeting ------------ ARCUA's next meeting will feature a presentation on severe weather spotting presented by Steve Piltz KA9MLL of the National Weather Service in Tulsa, Okla. The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. on April 6 in BELL 282 (Combs Auditorium) and is open to all area amateurs and public safety personnel. The speaker will be preceded at 6:45 p.m. by an ARCUA business meeting. SAREX Wrapup ------------ It's finally over. After the better part of three years of planning, the shuttle has come and gone from NW Arkansas. Of the 1600 (or so) people in Huntsville, Ark about 400 of them were crammed into the Watson Elementary Cafeteria on March 14! TeeVee, radio and print media were well represented and the event received state-wide publicity. All of W5YM's equipment functioned perfectly and, as a result, twelve kids got to ask a total of 14 questions of Lt Col William Gregory KC5MGA. The AMSAT folks were pleased with our technical skill and how well-prepared the kids were. Needless to say, this will be an event long-remembered in Huntsville. Prof Charlton K5GOE shot a video record of the evening and an audio tape was also made. Anyone interested in a copy of the audio tape may send $5 to Professor Charlton (members of the Away Team will be getting copies on the club). I would like to personally thank the members of the Away Team: Dan K5FXB, Prof Charlton K5GOE, Jeff KB5RUI, Clendon KC5JDO, Kevin KC5LDC, Ryan KC5LDD, Lynn N0PMQ, Andy KB0PBH, Walt N5YGR, and Frank KB5WAR. This wouldn't have happened without you guys. Thanks. - Peter Congrats ... ------------ ... to Abiy Zewde KC5JVK, who recently upgraded to Technician Plus, and Yew Yuan, who passed the Novice written. Both are continuing to work on their code (ask about ARCUA's code tapes). Good job guys! ... to Frank Buercklin KB5WAR who has accepted a position as an Associate RF Engineer with Ericsson Communications in Richardson, Texas. His salary? A zillion dollars. We'll be watching for alumni contributions, Frank. :-) Seriously, Frank, best of luck with your new career! Upcoming Exams and Hamfests --------------------------- Upcoming license exam sessions: Bella Vista, April 6; Siloam Springs, April 15. Little Rock Hamfest - April 1. Joplin Hamfest - April 8. The Prez Sez ... ---------------- Date: Wed, 29 Mar 1995 13:06:21 -0600 (CST) From: Jeff McFarland We've been so busy this past month, it's hard to believe we did not have an actual meeting in March! That's right, the first one got "snowed out" and the mid-month one was declared a victory banquet at the Hog's Breath Eatery. Despite this absence of formal meetings, ARCUA has perhaps been more active in March 1995 than at any point I can remember! Now that it's "Post-SAREX," we have some other projects to keep busy with. Foremost is our tower upgrade. We hope to get this knocked out during April, but it will probably take two weekends at the least. In addition, we are almost ready to start building the radio direction finding equipment. Finally, we are sending a delegation to the Joplin Hamfest next weekend to sell off some of our dust collectors in the shack. We have plenty to do, so i expect to see everyone involved! - Jeff Projects -------- As the prez mentioned, ARCUA has several projects to keep members occupied now that SAREX is over. Let's look at each one: First, we have the Handi Finder project. After Frank and Jeff's success with their senior design doppler array, and the fun that several club members had in fox hunts last semester, it was decided that building simple RDF equipment would be fun and (gulp) educational. A parts list based on a QST article has been made and parts will be ordered soon. VP Clendon Gibson KC5JDO is the leader of the project and can answer questions regarding the project. There is also a mail reflector set up for interested parties (foxhunt@babo.uark.edu). Send email to Clendon if you'd like to join. His address is csg2@engr.uark.edu. Next up is project Skyhook. This project includes installation of the "new" Rohn tilt-over tower and the newly-refurbished TH6DXX antenna. Physical Plant has agreed to install new guy anchors high atop the SCEN building. These are scheduled for installation on April 3. In anticipation of that, disassembly of the current tower is scheduled for this coming weekend (April 1-2). Details will be discussed at lunch tomorrow. Russ Smith N0QLT/5, is leading the antenna-refurbishment side of the project and needs help with that. Please volunteer - his address is hrs@engr.uark.edu. 73 DE W5YM =========================================================================== Considering joining the ARRL? If you do, make sure you do it through ARCUA. Why? Because the League lets us keep $5 from every new member that joins. We get $2 for every renewal, too. In addition to QST, widely viewed as the best amateur radio journal on the market, ARRL membership gives you important benefits like inexpensive equipment insurance, a Field Organization helping hams in every state and a voice in amateur radio related affairs in Washington DC. Please contact the treasurer 3 months in advance of your renewal date. =========================================================================== Razorback Radio News is a publication of the Amateur Radio Club of the University of Arkansas, Inc.
