********************************************* * Razorback Radio News - Electronic Edition * * (c) April 1995 * ********************************************* Annual meeting - 1st Thursday of September Regular meetings - 1st Thursday of each month Informal Lunch meeting - every Thursday Operation SKYWARN - whenever necessary!! Next Meeting ------------ By order of the ARCUA executive board (well, mostly Jeff), the May 4th meeting of ARCUA has been canceled. In it's place, the president has ordered that all interested members gather at Wilson Park in Fayetteville on May 5th ("dead day") for a cookout! Dr Charlton K5GOE and Dan Puckett K5FXB (and their families) will be our honored guests. Festivities will commence at 6 p.m. "Dues" will be $3. Please RSVP to Jeff jjm2@engr.uark.edu. Last Meeting ------------ The April meeting went quite well despite the fact that Jeff was ill. Kudos to Clendon Gibson KC5JDO on the fine fill-in performance. Remember, the vice president is only a heartbeat away ... In business, members accepted the new QSL policy, discussed Field Day and talked about ARCUA's emergency operations. The club made over $200 on it's recent trip to the Joplin Hamfest. Prof Charlton K5GOE gave a presentation on Georgia Tech W4AQL's operation ($4000 annual budget!!!) and brought everyone up to date on the tower project. Dan Puckett K5FXB talked about SKYWARN operations as well as the disaster exercise that took place the day after the meeting. Congratulations ... ------------------- To Yew Yuan who is now a Technician Class Amateur Radio Operator. Good job, Yew! (No sign of his license yet - odd since the usual turnaround is less than one week ...) That leaves only Kevin Fandre ... :-) Handi Finder(tm) ---------------- Who said hams don't build anything anymore? Members that signed up to build Handi Finders(tm) are requested to show up in Bell 291 at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday April 27 (today in many time zones). You need to bring the following: $10, 9V battery, 2 wire coat hangers or equivalent, tools if you have them, and a handi-talkie or scanner. The Handi Finder(tm) is a simple radio direction finder based on an article in QST. (A local foxhunt mailling list is also available) Field Day --------- Field Day is June 24 and 25 - mark your calendars! The ARRL's annual Field Day emergency preparedness exercise is almost here. The exercise is designed to test amateur preparation in case of disaster by rewarding clubs that set up stations under less than ideal conditions and then operating for a prolonged period. To encourage participation and station-building skills, points are awarded for each contact made during the exercise period. Bonus points are also awarded for things like publicizing amateur radio and exporing new modes. W5YM will operate in the "2A" category (plus Tech/Novice, packet, and V/UHF stations). Members interested in helping out at Field Day should contact Peter Laws N5UWY plaws@comp.uark.edu. A mailling list has been set up to facilitate planning. Tower ----- Operation Skyhook progresses at a snail's pace. First there was the delay in getting physical plant to install the anchors, then the weather. Well, the anchors are installed and, despite a wind-chill in the 30s, the tower is up as far as the hinge. The lower set of guys has also been installed. Weather permitting, we will be back at it on Sunday April 30, 12:30 p.m. Let's hope this will be the final time! A big Wooooo Pig! to Chuck Korzendorfer KM5G for his invaluable assistance. SKYWARN ------- "Attaboys" to KC5s LDC, EQJ, LDD, KB5WAR, N0QLT and N5YGR for their service during recent severe weather episodes. Kevin will be putting together some fill-in-the-blanks scripts to assist in our efforts should we need to function as net control again. Also, look at the W5YM WWW page for a link to the University of Oklahoma's SKYWARN page - lot's of good info and great pics! Emergency Preparedness ---------------------- Once again, ARCUA members participated in a campus emergency drill. KC5s JDO, LDC, KB5WPM, K5FXB, and N5YGR worked for about 90 minutes on the morning of April 21 relaying patient information from the scene of the incident to the Student Health Center. ARCUA's efforts were well received, no doubt due to the professionalism and competence displayed. The scenario? Fertilizer and fuel oil mix and explode, killing and injuring several students. It was planned in March. NEXT Razorback Radio News will be published June 15. 73 DE W5YM =========================================================================== Considering joining the ARRL?
