********************************************* * Razorback Radio News - Electronic Edition * * (c) June 1995 * ********************************************* Annual meeting - 1st Thursday of September Regular meetings - 1st Thursday of each month Informal Lunch meeting - every Thursday Operation SKYWARN - whenever necessary!! Who says ARCUA is dormant during the summer? In this issue: o Congrats o Cookout o QST pic o Operation Skyhook o New Computer o Field Day o W5YM-L o The Prez Sez Congrats... ----------- To Yew Yuan, now KC5OCS! Cookout held to Honor Day of the Dead ------------------------------------- ARCUA had the first of what many hope will become a Dead Day tradition: a cookout in Wilson Park. This year's festivities were organized (almost singlehandedly!) by our President, Jeff McFarland KB5RUI. As far as this reporter knows, no club funds were expended on this activity as it was completely covered by a $3/head user fee. To say that the cookout was a success is a bit of an understatement as 20 people showed up for the event! In addition to great grilled burgers (DE KB5RUI), awards were presented. The first of the two major awards went to Chuck Korzendorfer KM5G, who has helped the club tremendously in it's Operation Skyhook (details below). The other major award was a plaque (featuring an image of the W5YM QSL card) presented to Prof Charlton K5GOE, honoring him for being ARCUA's advisor and station trustee for 15 years. This is the longest period in our 80 (or so) year history that any one person has served in those capacities. Field Day is the next time ARCUA members will gather 'round a grill and there is talk of something similar in the fall as a recruiting tool ... QST --- Quick, run and get your June QST. Flip to page 11 (the Up Front section). Hey, who are those guys? Why, it's ARCUA's own Ryan Wells KC5LDD and Kevin Thornton KC5LDC, relaxing prior to a Razorback game! ARCUA VP and Official Photographer (when he remembers his camera!) Clendon Gibson KC5JDO snapped the photo prior to a game that featured KC5LDC as the National Anthem trumpet soloist. Let's see if we can't get at least one picture in QST each semester. Operation Skyhook Complete! --------------------------- Finally. Finally, the N5HG memorial tower is operational. After a year of planning, cooperation from the UA's Physical Plant, and several (OK, "many") roof-top work parties, W5YM is QRV again on HF! The new tower, which takes 15 minutes to crank up or down, is truly a sight to behold. Standing over 70 feet tall on top of a 7-story building, it is easily visible from many points in Fayetteville. Were the structure lighted, it would be visible as far away as the Catfish Town Restaurant on US 71B and near the Johnson exit of US 71. Combined with the SB220 1500 W amplifier from the estate of Carlos Solis TG9AI/WB5SDJ, ARCUA should do even better in this year's November Sweepstakes. Thanks to K5FXB, K5GOE, KC5JDO, and N5UWY for the final assistance. "New" Computer -------------- Thanks to the efforts and generosity of several ARCUA members and some non-members, what started as a lunchtime "What if" is now 99% complete. ARCUA now has a Intel 80386-based computer. A comprehensive list of donors will appear in the Back-to-School issue of RRN. Thanks to Don Faulkner KB5WPM for initial assembly and to KC5JDO, KB5RUI, and especially George Tatge WB5SRY for final setup and testing. Field Day --------- And now to the real reason for this mid-summer edition of RRN: the ARRL's annual Field Day Exercise! Field Day is a ham radio tradition that goes back over 60 years. It combines an emergency preparedness exercise with a contest, all in a cookout setting. The object is to work as many stations as possible on any or all amateur bands (except 10, 18 and 24-MHz bands) and in so doing, learn to operate in abnormal situations under less-than-optimum conditions. A premium is placed on skills and equipment developed to meet the challenge of emergency preparedness and to acquaint the public with the capabilities of Amateur Radio. So far, 12 people have volunteered to operate. All members are welcome to participate. If you would like to participate, please contact Peter Laws N5UWY, FD Chair. Current plans are to operate "2A" with two HF stations, a Novice/Technician/Tech Plus station and a VHF/UHF station. Digital modes will be used as well. Remember, digital counts double, whether its manual or automatic. Next Saturday, June 24 at 1800 UTC (1 p.m. local) is when the event begins. As in past years, ARCUA's FD will be held at Agri Park on N Garland Ave near the farm. W5YM-L ------ All current subscriptions to the W5YM-L mailing list are set to expire on September 1. LISTSERV will send a renewal "card" to each subscriber on that date. The subscriber will then have 14 days to return that message in order to stay subscribed. This policy will be in effect from now until the internet is legislated away. The Prez Sez ------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jun 1995 08:47:48 -0500 (CDT) From: Jeff McFarland W5YM is back on the air! After a semester of "restructuring," we have finally got everything back in order. The tower is up, the computer is up, the mess is gone, life is great! Many thanks to all who helped throughout the year, and especially those who stayed around this summer to tie up the many loose ends. It's time to start thinking about projects, programs, and speakers for next year. We already have a couple of suggestions left over from this past year, but we need more. It will be a BIG help for WHOMEVER IS THE NEXT PRESIDENT. Let me know what you want to do next year. Have a good summer! Jeff 73 DE W5YM =========================================================================== Considering joining the ARRL? If you do, make sure you do it through ARCUA. Why? Because the League lets us keep $5 from every new member that joins. We get $2 for every renewal, too. In addition to QST, widely viewed as the best amateur radio journal on the market, ARRL membership gives you important benefits like inexpensive equipment insurance, a Field Organization helping hams in every state and a voice in amateur radio related affairs in Washington DC. Please contact the treasurer 3 months in advance of your renewal date. =========================================================================== Razorback Radio News is a publication of the Amateur Radio Club of the University of Arkansas, Inc.
