Welcome Back!! -------------- Hard to believe that the summer is over. Especially since its 134 degrees outside. Phew. Greetings new members, old friends, Alumni and guests of ARCUA. Welcome to another year of Razorback Radio News! Remember: Dues are due and payable on or before September 1. Please remit to Dr Charlton in BELL 3169. Congratulations and Welcome --------------------------- Congratulations to John Glezen who is now KC5QJP. John is a Tech, but only needs to pass 13 w/m to become Advanced. Yes, John passed the first four written elements in one sitting. Good job, John. Welcome to Fayetteville and the U of A to Dr Peter Ungar of Anthropology. Dr Ungar was previously WD2AEG and is now KC5PYB. He found out about ARCUA through our World Wide Web page. The club's Web page is turning out to be a good recruiting tool. Meeting ------- The ARCUA Annual meeting is set for September 7 at 1845 CDT. Location will be BELL 291. On the agenda: a report on summer, officer elections, and planning for the upcoming year (especially recruiting). Summer ------ As has been the case for the past few summers, ARCUA was busy. In addition to finishing both the PC and the tower (see the June issue of RRN), members participated in Field Day and worked on power distribution at W5YM. Field Day was a lot of fun once again. W5YM was on the air in the 2A category. Field Day is an annual operating event that evaluates Amateur's readiness for emergency operations. To gauge that preparedness, Field Day is run as a contest. Points are awarded for each contact made and bonuses are awarded for things such as operating on solar power and running an information booth. W5YM made 394 QSOs for 788 QSO points. Adding the bonus points gave the club a total of 1758 points. Thanks to all the operators who made this possible. At W5YM, members have untangled most of the Rat's Nest of wires behind, on top of and underneath the operating bench. New AC power strips have been installed and cables tagged. On the DC side, a 13.8 VDC bus has been installed that includes an "uninterruptible power supply" to keep W5YM on the air when The Big One hits. Thanks to all members who contributed time and effort to this project, especially VP Clendon, Dust Bunny Rustler Extrordinaire. (TNX - K5GOE, K5FXB, KB5RUI, KC5JDO, KC5PYB, WB7TOY, KC5QJP, N5UWY) PR -- PR was a big part of Field Day this year. Almost 20 visitors stopped by our station to see Amateur Radio "in action". Our first visitor was Dennis Schaefer W5RZ. Dennis is ARRL Assistant Section Manager (ASM) for Arkansas. He joins fellow ASM Glenn Wolf AB5RQ, ARRL Delta Division Director Joel Harrison WB5IGF, and ARRL International Affairs Vice President Larry Price W4RA as a subscriber to RRN. ARCUA continues to score public relations points from last semester's SAREX project. The recent issue of the U of A's "Reflections" features a photo of one of the Huntsville students at the mic aided by our own Vice President, Dan Laws (Well, that's what it says ...). Hopefully this will aid in recruiting. On a related note, the tape of Huntsville's SAREX QSO is shown several times per month on Community Access Television, available here in Fayetteville on TCA cable, channel 8. The Prez Sez ... ---------------- Date: Mon, 28 Aug 1995 16:03:04 -0500 (CDT) From: Jeff McFarland Well, it's been a fun train ride this past year. I've enjoyed the privilege of presiding over ARCUA and I hope you have not been too inconvenienced by my "management style." The club has been making a lot of progress the past few years and I think 1994-95 has been no exception. As the outgoing president (..I will not seek nor will I accept the nomination of my party for president...) I suppose a few parting words are in order. My biggest goal as president was to get the membership more involved. This needs to continue with the next executive committee. We've seen what an active membership can do - SAREX, a new tower, and a good station cleanup. Another positive aspect that must go on is the public exposure ARCUA has. It is very important that the University community as well as the local community and ham radio community know ARCUA is a first-class organization. The more we get the word out, via newsletters, press releases, and the world wide web, the better. Finally, ARCUA needs to focus on recruitment of new members. I think this is best accomplished by fulfilling the first goal: having an active membership. People want to go where the action is. As long as ARCUA is busy, we'll have new members. It's been a great year. I've enjoyed it a lot, but I feel someone else needs to take a leadership role now. I'm always available for consultation or to be on the receiving end of delegation. Good luck to the next executive committee. Jeff McFarland, KB5RUI President ARCUA, 1994-95 Administrative Notes -------------------- From the Public Information Officer: First, subscribers to W5YM-L will be receiving renewal notices shortly. Please follow the directions carefully in order to maintain your W5YM-L subscription. Failure to respond within the 2 week grace period cancels your subscriptions. If you no longer wish to receive this newsletter or if you receive two copies of this newsletter, please notify the PIO at plaws@comp.uark.edu so that your subscription can be clarified. For those keeping score, this is the 19th electronic issue of Razorback Radio News since January 1994. 73 DE W5YM =========================================================================== Considering joining the ARRL? You should and when you do, make sure you do it through ARCUA. Why? Because the League lets us keep $5 from every new member that joins. We get $2 for every renewal, too. In addition to QST, widely viewed as the best amateur radio journal on the market, ARRL membership gives you important benefits like a voice in amateur radio related affairs in Washington DC, inexpensive equipment insurance, and a Field Organization helping hams in every state. Please contact the treasurer 3 months in advance of your renewal date. =========================================================================== Razorback Radio News is a publication of the Amateur Radio Club of the University of Arkansas, Inc.
