This meeting will feature ARCUA alumnus Jim Haynes W6JVE speaking on the topic of wireline telegraphs. Mr Haynes will speak immediately following a brief business meeting. Pizza and soda will follow. A special meeting will be held January 18th, 1996. Topic will be RF amplifiers presented by Paul Moffitt a graduate student in Electrical Engineering. February 1st, 1996 is ARCUA's annual Severe Weather Spotter's class. Mr Steve Piltz KA9MLL of the National Weather Service in Tulsa will be the featured speaker. Collegiate Championship ----------------------- For the second year running, W5YM participated in the Collegiate Championship. The Championship, held during the ARRL November Sweepstakes, began last year as a way to stimulate activity in college radio clubs in North America. Last year, W5YM placed fifth in the phone portion of the contest with 145,684 points (full Collegiate results are on the W5YM WWW page). This year, with powerhouse W4AQL (Georgia Tech) absent from competition, an all-out effort was made by ARCUA members to secure the phone championship. That effort (combined with the N5HG tower, W5XH beam, and KC5PYB kW amp!) was a success and has put W5YM in the top spot! Once again W5YM achieved a "clean sweep" and was able to work 1395 stations (214,830 points) during the 24 hour contest period. As of this writing, it appears that W5YM will finish 88 QSOs ahead of W6UE (Cal Tech) and take the phone portion! Congratulations to all who participated. Your editor would especially like to K5GOE, KC5LDC, KC5JDO, KC5LDD, KB5RUI, N5UWY, N5YGR, N0QLT, and KC5PYB who operated W5YM as well as KB5TFX, K5FXB, KM5G, Jason, Heather, and Paulette (and harmonics) who provided logistical and moral support. Tee Shirts ---------- The Tee Shirts are IN and they look great! Those of you who have ordered shirts need to drop by Prof Charlton's office to pay, then drop by Peter Laws' office (OZAR 214) to get your shirt. If you're a member (or Alum) and didn't place an order, ARCUA still has shirts left. Shirts are ash (marketingspeak for grey) in color and feature the "slobbering hog" on the back with the words "Home of Real HAM Radio for Over 80 years" and "Amateur Radio Club University of Arkansas". The front has your choice of club call sign OR a pocket. All shirts are 100% cotton. Currently in stock: L - 5 (2 w/pocket; XL - 10 (2 w/pocket). Any shirt, $11.50 (+ $3.20 shipping). If these sell out and there is still demand, a second printing will be considered. Prez Sez -------- Date: Mon, 27 Nov 1995 22:34:27 -0600 (CST) From: Kevin Thornton Subject: prez sez Seasons greetings! I hope this letter finds everyone enjoying the holiday spirit and lots of food. Well, the semester is about to end. I think it has been a productive one for ARCUA. We have managed to add some new equipment to the shack and work on our antennas. Our other projects are moving right along, too. I don't know if you've noticed, but ARCUA has been receiving a lot of great publicity lately. I think this is wonderful. I know it has a lot to do with our community service commitment (i.e. Last spring's SAREX contact). I hope that our Boy/Girl Scout project will prove to be another outstanding example of community service. So, that gives us something to look forward to for next semester. Our "Big Project," so to speak. Hey, ARCUA is really leading the pack in Registered Student Organizations! One more thing. It looks like we will be having our yearbook pictures taken next week. Watch W5YM-L for a confirmation. Right now, the tentative date and time is Thursday, December 7, at 6:30pm in the Union Ballroom. So, mark your calendar and plan on being there. We will have our regular meeting in ENGR 209 immediately following the photo. Wear your new W5YM shirts if you've got 'em. And sign up for your free yearbook so you can see our picture! See you at the next meeting, Kevin, KC5LDC Equipment --------- ARCUA's Kenwood TS820 is back from the shop. A "non-serviceable" filter was the gremlin. The PacComm Tiny II TNC is up and running. Combined with the Falco dumb terminal, W5YM is now QRV on the DXCluster, even while running RTTY! Antennas -------- Thanks to K5GOE, K5FXB, KC5LDC, KC5JDO, KB5RUI, and N5UWY: the 30m sloper is back in the air, the counterweights for the OSCAR array are good-to-go for another winter, the guy wires have been properly secured, and the PK232 is properly adjusted for HF digital modes. Thanks to all who participated! Code Class Update ----------------- Code class is still going every Thursday night. An exam is planned for some time in January. 73 DE W5YM =========================================================================== Considering joining the ARRL?
