Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1993 23:24:49 +0600 (CST) Subject: ARCUA News Next Meeting ------------ The next regular meeting of ARCUA will be on Thursday, March 4th at 7pm in Bell 291, immediately following code practice. The Mr. Phil Chaney, of the UA Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies, will speak on the Global Positioning System (GPS). Fundraising ----------- On Tuesday evening, the Associated Student Government awarded ARCUA the sum of $153 from the "B-Funds" account. This money is comes from your student activity fee and is awarded to Registered Student Organizations each semester. At today's "Ham Lunch" (every thursday at about noon in the Servery), KB5WAR, N5YGR, W5/LA1PCA, K5GOE, K5FXB and N5UWY stuffed about 3 million envelopes (OK, OK, 150) as part of ARCUA's latest fundraising campaign. The packages, which included a letter outlining our financial needs and a historical time line for amateur radio at the U of A, went out to all known current and former ARCUA members. The B-Funds, combined with some cash we have in the treasury, will allow the Club to purchase Yaesu computer-controllable azimuth/elevation rotators for satellite operation. Hopefully, we will raise enough extra cash from the letter campaign to allow the purchase of a Kansas City Tracker board. The KCT board will allow automatic pointing of the OSCAR antenna array, a necessity for satellites in low earth orbit (LEO). Code Class ---------- The code class is going quite well. There are currently six people learning the code and all should be able to pass at least the 5 wpm test (if not the 13 wpm test!) by the end of the semester. On a related note, N5YGR, KB5UPY and myself N5UWY, will be trekking to Siloam Springs on March 6 to take part in the Exam session there. The main reason for going now is because *one* of those three has an about-to-expire credit slip for the General written exam and if he doesn't get 13 wpm on that date, he will have to retake that exam element. I won't say who that person is. 8-) "DXpediton" to V31 (Belize) --------------------------- Jeanette Bider KB5TFX / V31FX (N5UWY's XYL) is currently in Belize, Central America doing graduate research work. Over Spring Break, she will be joined by N5UWY, K5GOE and his son, Nate. In addition to touring the country, they will assist Jeanette in setting up an HF station which will allow her to communicate with N5UWY at W5YM. In addition to saving on phone bills 8-), Jeanette also hopes to talk on the air to school-age kids and others about her research. Silent Key ---------- UA graduate and former ARCUA member Carlos Solis WB5SDJ / TG9AI died of a heart attack this week. He was visiting relatives in Guatemala at the time. He was active in local Amateur Radio activities and will be missed. 73, Peter Laws N5UWY Peter Laws|GEnie:P.LAWS1|"Finally: one of our guys is |plaws@uafhp.uark.edu n5uwy@ka5bml.ar.usa.noam|driving the car"--Dennis Miller|plaws@uafsysb.bitnet
