Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1993 20:48:10 +0600 (CST) From: Peter Laws Subject: ARCUA Meeting THURSDAY!! Meeting This Thursday --------------------- The first of two April ARCUA meetings is this Thursday, April 1st, at 1900 hours in room 291, Bell Engineering Center. The topic will be the Global Positioning System (GPS). The speaker will be Mr. Phil Chaney of the UA Center for Advanced Spatial Technology. Code Class ---------- The First Annual (maybe) ARCUA Morse Code Class has come to an end and the executive is pleased to announce that Dr. Juan Balda of ELEG passed the Novice test as administered by Dan Puckett K5FXB and Charles Tillotson N5NXH. Forest Lawson WB5EJO (a non-member) was also able to increase his code speed to the point where he was able to pass the 13 wpm test. Congratulations to all! Antenna Party(ies) ------------------ Three antenna parties are *tentatively* scheduled in the near future. The first is on Saturday, April 3rd. This is an antenna *building* party where participants will be building 1/4 wave ground-plane antennas (2m and 70cm) that will be sold at the Springdale HamFest (May 8). The second and third do not have firm dates yet. One will be to dismantle the late Carlos Solis' (WB5SDJ) antenna system. The other will involve various tasks at W5YM (see below). W5YM Maintenance ---------------- There are several items needing maintenance/installation at W5YM: 1) The Azimuth/Elevation rotators have arrived (!) and need to be installed. 2) Carlos' Estate included two 2m rigs that will replace our two Regency tube type rigs. The Kenwood TM7800 (#?) keyboard programmable rig will serve as our main "repeater" rig. The Heath thumb-wheel (OK - bat-handle, but they *look* like thumb-wheel) programmable will serve as our packet rig. These need to be installed at the operating position. 3) The 2m J-Pole needs to be tuned (SWR > 3:1 :-( ). 4) The 2m Ground Plane needs to be repaired/replaced. 5) "WARC" dipoles are needed so that we can operate 12m/17m/30m. Belize ------ Dr. Charlton K5GOE/V31OE and I (N5UWY/V31WY) had a great time in Belize over spring break. I took an Icom IC725, a "5 band" trap dipole, and a 30w solar panel with me. The station was set-up by and for my wife, Jeanette KB5TFX/V31FX, who is there doing her PhD research. While 'GOE and I were there, we were able to make about 20 or so contacts, including W5YM and AB5GG (club member Clark Calvert). The solar panel works really well, too, and should provide more than enough power to charge the battery. Packet Reminder --------------- If you use the packet station at 'YM and change the MYC parameter to *your* call -- please remember to change it back when you are done! I had a nice keyboard-to-keyboard chat with a fellow ham who thinks I am AA5DL... If you are just checking in to the KA5BML PBBS you can use the *** LINKED TO command instead of changing the MYC. See you all at the meeting! 73, Peter Peter Laws|GEnie:P.LAWS1|"Finally: one of our guys is |plaws@uafhp.uark.edu n5uwy@ka5bml.ar.usa.noam|driving the car"--Dennis Miller|plaws@uafsysb.bitnet
