Quints (300, 3000) are listed as "engines" if they are
the only piece in a station or if there is also a truck of some sort
with them. "Moles" are the collapse rescue teams. "Spiders" are the high-angle rescue team. |

Closed Fire Stations |

Calls from the MUC 911 center are routed to the "centre de communications" located at fire headquarters on the east slope of Mount Royal. The ALI information from Bell Québec is automatically entered into the CAD system. In rare instances, the dispatcher must manually enter the address. The type of incident is then entered and the system decides the appropriate response. Once the data is entered, the system sends it over leased data lines to the appropriate fire house or apparatus (I don't know whether or not the old box circuits are used for this - certainly would make sense!).
All apparatus are equipped with mobile data terminals. These units appear to be ruggedized laptops. They are graphics-capable and can display maps generated by the CAD system. Function keys handle most common 10 codes (10-16, 10-17, 10-5) and others ("back in station", etc). Once any button is pushed, the unit's status is changed on a screen at fire alarm.
Street boxes removed: 1979. Last master box out of service: c.1987. Radio tapper out of service: c.1987.
The Alarm Room is very modern. However, in addition to the six fully equipped computerized work stations, the walls are lined with alarm receivers, there is a "pedestal" box in one corner, and, beneath the video projection screen (that can display any of the CAD screens, including maps), there is a paper tape telegraph register! Nice touch!
You can see in the images how large a room this is. The acoustics of this room are responsible for the distinctive sound of the SSIM dispatchers.
Pre-CAD "GIS" ... :-) Images from 4040 Parc are from 1996-08-21, so things may have changed. At the time, the workstations were running OS/2.
There are 4 categories of fire calls: a "2 and 1", "2 and 1 and a squad", "2 and 2 and a squad", and finally "3, 2, a squad and a chief". See Jim's page for an updated list of "Categories".
There is a 1954 National Film Board film entitled Montreal Fire Department. Seen it? It's worth calling them to borrow (since it's not online). It's a fifteen minute long episode of the CBC series On the Spot. Narrator is the late Fred Davis. Excellent B/W footage of telegraph alarm system, ancient tillered city-service ladders, etc. Summary of the Rescue Squad, which even back then had SCBA, compressed air saws and "pavement breakers", acetylene torches, and a surgical kit for use by physicians. Neat stuff. Seeing Box 345 come in on the circuit, then being retransmitted to the stations was awesome!
